AN international war on culinary delights has broken out with the Scottish claiming they created chicken tikka masala while a historian believes the English created the Scottish favourite haggis. Historian Catherine Brown claimed haggis was invented by the English before being hijacked by Scottish nationalists as their own. She claims to have has discovered references to the dish in a recipe book dated 1616 and titled "The English Hus-Wife". The book, by Gervase Markham, was published at least 171 years before Scotland's national bard Robert Burns penned his poem, "Address to the Haggis", which made the dish famous. The first mention Brown could find of Scottish haggis was in 1747, indicating that the dish originated south of Scotland and was later copied from English books. "It was originally an English dish. In 1615, Gervase Markham says that it is very popular among all people in England," she said. "By the middle of the 18th century another English cookery writer, Hannah Glasse, has a recipe that she calls Scotch haggis, the haggis that we know today"...
Meanwhile, a chef from Glasgow claims he invented chicken tikka masala , and is pressing the EU to give it "Protected Designation of Origin'' status, alongside the likes of Champagne, Parma Ham and Greek Feta cheese. The Ali family, owners of Shish Mahal restaurant in Glasgow, said they came up with the creamy, mildly spicy curry in the 1970s to please the Scots, but then it went on to become the most popular dish in British restaurants. "Chicken tikka masala was invented in this restaurant, we used to make chicken tikka, and one day a customer said, 'I'd take some sauce with that, this is a bit dry','' said Ahmed Aslam Ali, 64, founder of Shish Mahal. "We thought we'd better cook the chicken with some sauce. So from here we cooked chicken tikka with the sauce that contains yogurt, cream, spices. "It's a dish prepared according to our customer's taste, usually they don't take hot curry, that's why we cook it with yogurt and cream.''
