There are times when we crave the company of others, the busy bustle of every day life, and the sounds and smells of daily commerce all around. There also are days when we need to break from all of this. Times when we feel so alone in crowded places, but find comfort in our own company. This was one of those days. Rain pelted against the windows relentlessly. There seemed no break in the weather, yet still I needed to get out. To be alone to think and to clear my head. So grabbing my coat and hat, I set off for a bracing walk up and over Black Hill.
At first it was pretty heavy going through the long grass and then the slippery mud slides of the old farm track. But with my head down, I leaned into the driving rain, while hanging onto my hat for fear of losing it. With hands and face wet and aching with the cold, I pushed on up the hill until, after a short while, I came to a long overhanging avenue of trees leading up into the ancient oak wood on the side of Black hill. Once beneath the avenue, I welcomed it's greenery and natural shelter from the pouring rain. At last, even the intrusive sounds of speeding traffic and the mechanics of daily life were replaced by the constant but gentle roar of rain on the canopy high above me....
