China does not keep track of the Dalai Lama's birthday, which fell on Tuesday, preferring to remember the date of Tibet's "peaceful liberation" and "serf emancipation day," a government spokesman said. The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, now 75, has had health problems in recent years which have been closely followed by both exiles and the Chinese government, because of uncertainty about who will succeed him. Beijing claims a historical right to final approval of any reincarnation of the Dalai Lama and other senior Tibetan religious figures, which is disputed by exiles. But Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said he was not keeping track of the Dalai Lama's age, and suggested people devote themselves to remembering other landmarks. "I can only remember two dates," said Qin, when asked about the Dalai Lama's birthday. "One is March 28, 1951, which was the day of Tibet's peaceful liberation; the other is May 23, 1959, when Tibet began its democratic reforms, and which we now call Serf Emancipation Day," he added. "Please remember to keep these two dates in mind." Chinese Communist troops marched into Tibet in 1950. The Dalai Lama fled in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, and has since campaigned for self-rule from exile...

The actor who plays Harry Potter villain Draco Malfoy is reportedly related to real-life witches. Experts found actor Tom Felton is descended from convicts hanged during the Salem witch trials in 1692. Researcher David Nelson said: "I have discovered concrete proof of a link between Tom and some of those who were executed. "He is a distant relative of John Proctor - who was hanged on August 19, 1692. I have informed Tom's manager about witches in his family tree." Mr Nelson, of Salt Lake City, US, has been probing the Salem witches' history for four years. He found the teen star is also related to seven others involved in the most infamous witch hunt in history. Another distant relative is Lt Nathaniel Felton, a defence witness in the trial sparked by two young girls suffering fits and mysterious illnesses in Salem, Massachusetts. Felton, 19, has become a household name, appearing in all the films of JK Rowling's books as Harry's arch enemy at Hogwarts school...

Serbian vampire hunters rammed a wooden stake through the heart of former dictator Slobodan Milosevic to stop him 'returning from the dead'. Miroslav Milosevic, no relation to the former president, gave himself up to police who have launched an investigation. He claimed he and his fellow vampire hunters acted to stop the former dictator returning from the dead to haunt the country. Milosevic's Socialist Party of Serbia, which led the country to civil war and oversaw the break up of the former Yugoslavia, condemned the desecration of the grave in the eastern town of Pozarevac. The vampire hunters told police the three-foot-long wooden steak had been driven into the ground and through the late president's heart. Slobodan Milosevic died on March 11, 2006, while on trial before a UN war crimes tribunal for his role in the 1990s break-up of the former Yugoslavia. Slobodan Milosevic's daughter-in-law Milica Gajic said she planned to sue the vampire hunters and accused the police of failing to protect the grave properly...

Cleopatra was not the great beauty that legend would have us believe - and Antony was no oil painting either. A study of a 2,000-year-old silver coin found the Egyptian queen, famously portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor, had a pointed chin, thin lips and sharp nose. Her Roman lover, played by Richard Burton, had bulging eyes, thick neck and a hook nose. The tiny coin was studied by experts at Newcastle University. On one side is the head of Mark Antony, while Cleopatra is on the reverse. The size of a modern 5p piece, the artefact from 32BC was in a collection belonging to the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle. The university's director of archaeological museums, Lindsay Allason-Jones, said: "The image on the coin is far from being that of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. "Roman writers tell us that Cleopatra was intelligent and charismatic, and that she had a seductive voice but, tellingly, they do not mention her beauty. "The image of Cleopatra as a beautiful seductress is a more recent image"...

Fifty-five nuns - all called Maria - are on the run after racking up debts of £400,000. The women had secretly run a knitwear company on the side for ten years. Their convent supplied 25 shops and they blew money travelling to fashion shows across Europe, reports the Sun. The nuns of St Kyrikos and Ioulite in Northern Greece hit money problems after spending huge sums on new machinery. Their expensive knitting machines were put on a lorry and the sisters disappeared a few days later. Greek Orthodox Church officials believe they may be hiding at a monastery in Volos, Central Greece. The nuns' lawyer Dionysios Pelekis said they had asked church superiors to settle the debt by selling 16 convent-owned properties. But the request was refused...
